ICE CityZen competitions

ICE’s two CityZen competitions feature our unique and award-winning digital challenges and are free to enter – with great prizes too!

They take place in the autumn term and can be completed flexibly to fit into your schools’ extra-curricular time.

They're both great for developing your students’ skills and confidence and also give insights into some of the most valued and in-demand careers in the engineering sector.

ICE CityZen Award for 16-18-year-olds

The ICE CityZen Award challenges students aged 16-18 to become virtual civil engineers and design bold, inclusive, and sustainable solutions for the communities of tomorrow.

The competition is in two parts – the four-round CityZen Award computer game and an optional project.

Support your students in tackling real-world challenges in our easy to deliver competition for 16-18s.

Use this competition to:

  • Deliver project-based learning – growing your students’ research and critical thinking skills (with the chance to pick up a CREST award).
  • Explore sustainability and urban design and content relevant to the geography and design technology curriculums.
  • Polish your students’ teamwork abilities and give them the chance to have fun challenging themselves with our multi-award-winning game.
  • Get your students career-ready with communication skill development that will stand them in great stead for interviews.
  • Encourage students to think about careers in engineering (meeting Gatsby benchmarks 4 and 5).

Want to grow your skills, learn about sustainability and be in with the chance to win some great prizes?

The ICE CityZen Award offers you the chance to be recognised for your creativity and problem-solving abilities and learn about exciting careers that help people and the environment.

You will:

  • Play a four-round computer game with your friends.
  • Come up with a creative solution to an issue that affects your local community and/or environment.
  • Make a 2-4 minute video pitching your solution (optional).
  • Get a certificate of participation plus be in with the chance to win up to £2,000 (shared between team members and school) and a VIP lunch with ICE’s President!

Inspire the next generation to choose a career in civil engineering. Mentoring is a vital part of the competition which we know you will enjoy just as much as the students do!

You will need to be a current ICE member and also a STEM Ambassador with up-to-date accreditation to be a competition mentor.

Your role:

  • Answer questions to help students’ understanding of civil engineering.
  • Give teams feedback while they develop their project ideas.
  • Be a role model and inspire your teams to explore career options .

ICE CityZen Pollution Control Competition

This shorter ICE CityZen challenge invites students aged 14-16 to step into the role of virtual civil engineers and tackle a river pollution mystery. Through an interactive digital game, students will investigate causes, analyse data, and design solutions to protect communities and the environment.

The challenge is free to enter, takes around 1-2 hours of class or extra-curricular time and is easy to set-up and run.

  • Encourage applied STEM learning.

You will:

  • Practice your problem-solving skills and have fun with friends solving the river pollution mystery.
  • Find out about exciting careers in civil engineering that help people and the environment.
  • Get a certificate of completion and the chance to win a prize as a top scorer.
