About this event

The construction of the Royal Albert Bridge was famously completed in 1859. It was designed by I K Brunel and was the last of his structures to be built during his lifetime – in failing health he was carried across it just days before his death.

Like the great man himself, the magnificent structure is affected by the passage of time and requires regular inspections in order to ensure it fulfils the purpose for which it was created. Its huge size and towering height means that engineering specialists are required in order to get to every part of this varied structure; engineers employing a variety of difficult access techniques such as Industrial Rope Access, Commercial Diving, Sonar scanning and Confined Space Entry; engineers that can reach the parts other engineers cannot reach.

Our speaker is Kimble West, is the Technical Director at XEIAD, a civil engineering company specialising in difficult access. He has a wealth of experience and knowledge in civil engineering innovation that spans over 20 years. Kimble currently has lead responsibility for technical quality, staff competency and major tenders as well as an operational inspection role as a senior Level 3 Rope Access Supervisor and Chartered Civil Engineer.

Kimble has been involved in inspecting the Royal Albert Bridge for over 10 years. With this experience and background he is ideally placed to explore innovation in the field of Engineering Inspection and with the opportunity to showcase such work on the Royal Albert Bridge, he has helped XEIAD to place itself at the forefront of Engineering Inspection and innovation.
