Ray Hobbs BSc, PhD, CMarEng, CEng

Ray Hobbs

Dr Hobbshas been active in the offshore industry for over 45 years and, following a long career in Lloyd’s Register as head of its geotechnical team has, for almost 20 years, been a successful independent consultant to both the oil and gas and renewables sectors.

As well as desk studies, including expert witness and insurance work related to jack-up leg plunging and wind turbine grouted connection failure, he has made frequent trips offshore for the installation of over 80 structures, including Piper Alpha (1976), Murchison (1979), Hutton TLP (1983), North Rankin A (from 1982 -1987), Mossel Bay FA (1990) and Clair Ridge DP (2013) and, as client representative, on countless offshore site investigations around the world.

He acted as a consultant to the BP Large Diameter Pile Tests in clay and the Euripides pile tests in sand. He is a former chairman and long-term committee member of OES and sits on API, ISO, IOGP and BSI code-writing committees covering offshore geotechnics, as well as the SUT Offshore Site Investigation and Geotechnics committee. He recently completed a second 3-year stint on the British Geotechnical Association Executive Committee. He actively contributed to writing ISO 19901-8 (Marine Soil Investigations) and SUT Guidance Notes on ground investigations for offshore renewables, and is currently involved in updates of these documents, amongst others. He was on the organising committee for the 2017 and earlier OSIG conferences, and has served on IMarEST’s Technical Affairs Committee.
