Using case studies from Scotland, and around the world, Christopher Jack, Technical Director from COWI, will highlight rock engineering challenges and how these were overcome. Note: some projects will be anonymised due to confidentiality requirements.
- The problems that faults, dykes and associated weathering can cause to tunnelling projects (e.g. stability, construction issues and groundwater inflow) will be highlighted through case studies from Scotland and Sweden.
- The significant impact karstic conditions can have on a project will be explored with reference to a hydroelectric tunnel in Central America. In addition, the failings in geological understanding within the project that contributed to the problem will be discussed.
- The huge impact that water-sensitive rocks can have on tunnelling projects will be illustrated by another case study from Central America.
