COP26 and Engineering Greenhush, online

What could go wrong with this event from Northern Region? It starts with a 20minute play written by a civil engineer, played by civil engineers, about a “sustainability” university engineering lecture, in front of a live virtual audience of mostly civil engineers playing the role of restive students (you), who start to realise that things need to change.

Unfortunately, when it comes to global warming nothing is straightforward, particularly in 2021, the year of fires, flood and heat, just a few weeks before the planet’s fate is sealed at COP26.

The play will be followed by a chance to discuss and vote on issues raised by the play and the associated new novel “Greenhush” (http://www.greenhush.org.uk).

This event is open to all who might be affected by the climate, inside or outside engineering.

This will be broadcast online and recorded.

Robert Thorniley-Walker

  • First project was the Thames Barrier in 1980 (used up to 50 times a year)
  • Published several technical papers on risks and climate, often using opinions gathered from engineer-led events
  • Visiting university lecturer on low carbon materials and climate
  • Delegate for engineers at COP21 in Paris 2015
  • ICE Climate Task Force 2016-18
  • Argues that the risks are orders of magnitude too great and other measures are needed beyond: “whole life sustainability”, “Net Zero Targets” and “Taxation”

Paula McMahon

When Paula isn’t stepping out of her comfort zone to take part in this play in order to initiate discussions and gather opinions on climate action she:

  • Is Sir Robert McAlpine’s Northern Regional Supervising Officer for where she oversees the professional development of future ICE members
  • Manages the Social Value for the A19 DBFO Project, is an Employee Representative and sits on several Affinity and leadership groups
  • Is currently the North East Chair, Honorary Editor and Panel Chair for the flagship ICE Proceedings: Civil Engineering and Trustee Elect
  • Sits on several strategy groups including the North East Chamber of Commerce Transport Forum and Teesside University’s Engineering Board where she is also a visiting lecturer
  • Is the driving force behind Engineering Together which brings together a wide selection of UK and International Engineering Institutions
  • A multi award winner
