Disaster Risk Reduction and Flood Mitigation, Loughborough

About this event

The ICE East Midlands G&S Committee is excited to invite you to a lecture on ‘Disaster Risk Reduction and Flood Mitigation in Loughborough’. This thought-provoking lecture will be delivered by two speakers; Dr Lee Bosher and a representative from the Environment Agency.

Disaster Risk Reduction: What is your role (as a civil engineer)?

Presented by Dr Lee Bosher, a Reader in Disaster Risk Management in the Water Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) at Loughborough University. Lee has recently been involved in research projects investigating how disaster risk can be reduced in the UK, Vietnam, Indonesia and across Europe. Lee’s books include: ‘Disaster risk reduction for the built environment’ (2017) and ‘Hazards and the Built Environment’ (2008). Lee’s lecture will include:

  • An overview of the hazards/threats and the impacts of disasters globally
  • Insights into why disasters are not ‘natural’
  • Disaster risk reduction explained

Flood Mitigation in Loughborough

The Environment Agency (EA) are responsible for managing the risk of flooding from main rivers, reservoirs, estuaries and the sea. The Partnership and Strategic Overview (PSO) team take a catchment-wide, strategic approach to identify areas of high risk and work with partners to develop potential new schemes to reduce this risk. This part of the lecture will include:

  • An overview of the current engineered flood defences in Loughborough
  • The opportunities and constraints of a new scheme
  • Incident response – the EA’s role in a flood event
