About this event

Two civil engineers, two separate trips, Englishmen in New York: Peter Radford and David Peake will share with the audience their experiences and observations on civil engineering in the city. The talk will include major bridges, historic buildings, some hidden gems and the stories of some of their creators.

Speakers

Peter Radford

Peter joined the ICE as a student in 1980. Immediately concentrating on bridges Peter worked on many historic structures in London and on early suspension bridges. He wrote London Underground’s 300 page Bridge and Structure Inspection Manual in 1990/91.

Moving west to Wellington Peter spent around 15 years in charge of Somerset’s bridges and found himself fixing the Bridgwater harbour wall after its extraordinary collapse in 2011, leading to numerous TV appearances! Peter, a fellow of the ICE and former chair of ICE SW.

David Peake

David has been a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers for 36 years and achieved Chartered status in 1992. His career has mainly focused on highways but he has had a broad interest in civil engineering since seeing JCBs digging up Bolton town centre as a small child. David is currently the chairman of the ICE’s Taunton City Club.
