This digitally delivered event forms the annual ICE/Costain Health & Safety Prestige Lecture for 2020.
As part of Costain’s continuing drive to champion the industry to eliminate harm, the 12th Annual Joint ICE-Costain Health & Safety Prestige Lecture is entitled “Leading, Adapting and Thriving in our New World of Work”
We have all taken great strides to reduce the harm caused to our people, property and environment in the development, delivery, and operation of infrastructure.
2020 has been the year where we have had to deal with a very different risk, a risk that has fundamentally changed the way we work, which has had both positive and negative impacts on our people, business and wider industry.
The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has meant that all sectors of industry have had to quickly react and innovate their organisational working practices. But have we really fully understood, adapted and addressed the health and safety aspects of our New World of Work, where more of us are working remotely and where we need to have a greater focus on mental health and wellbeing in order for us all to thrive.
For this year’s lecture we have brought together two World Class Speakers who will address the two key ingredients of Wellbeing and Leadership.
Practising doctor, prize-winning graduate of University College London School of Medicine (1990), and author of 9 books, including the A Great Day at the Office.
John will focus on the “What” – What we need to do as individuals and organisations to ensure that we all thrive in our new world of work, what we need to do to achieve healthy high performance and what we need to do to create a Sustainable Wellbeing Culture.
Former nuclear submarine Commander and named one of the Top 100 Leadership Speakers by Inc. Magazine. David is the Author of the Amazon #1 Best Seller: Turn the Ship Around!
David will focus on the “How” – How do we create a workplace where everyone engages and contributes, where they are healthier and happier because they have more control over their work, where everyone is a leader and how do we make a Sustainable Wellbeing Culture a reality.

Captain U.S. Navy (Retired), and International Keynote Speaker
Student of leadership and organizational design, former nuclear submarine Commander, and named one of the Top 100 Leadership Speakers by Inc. Magazine. David is the Author of the Amazon #1 Best Seller: Turn the Ship Around!, and The Turn the Ship Around Workbook. David’s recently released book, Leadership is Language, is a Wall Street Journal Bestseller.
David Marquet imagines a work-place where everyone engages and contributes their full intellectual capacity, a place where people are healthier and happier because they have more control over their work–a place where everyone is a leader.
A 1981 U.S. Naval Academy graduate, Captain Marquet served in the U.S. submarine force for 28 years. After being assigned to command the nuclear-powered submarine USS Santa Fe – then ranked last in retention and operational standing – he realized the traditional leadership approach of “take control, give orders,” wouldn’t work. He “turned the ship around” by treating the crew as leaders, not followers, and giving control, not taking control. This approach took the Santa Fe from “worst to first,” achieving the highest retention and operational standings in the navy.
After Captain Marquet’s departure, the Santa Fe continued to win awards and promoted a disproportionate number of officers and enlisted men to leadership positions, including ten subsequent submarine captains. Stephen R. Covey said it was the most empowering organization he’d ever seen and wrote about Captain Marquet’s leadership practices in his book, The 8th Habit.
Captain Marquet is the author of Turn the Ship Around! A True Story of Turning Followers Into Leaders. Fortune magazine named it the #1 must-read business book of the year, and USA Today listed it as one of the top 12 business books of all time. He is also the author of The Turn the Ship Around Workbook, which is a companion workbook for implementing Intent-Based Leadership.
David’s new book, Leadership is Language, is the new playbook for leaders. “It’s time to ditch the Industrial Age playbook of leadership.” This book provides a structure as well as the specific language for dramatically improving decision-making and execution for teams. In addition to being a Wall Street Journal and Washington Post bestseller, Leadership is Language has been named the Business Book of the Month by The Financial Times of London.
Captain Marquet retired from the Navy in 2009, and now speaks to audiences live on-line, recorded and in-person around the globe who want to create empowering work environments that release the passion, initiative, and intellect of each person. This bold and highly effective framework is summarized as “give control, create leaders.”
