Construction has a long record of low productivity, with the annual productivity growth being only 1% over the past 20 years. The industry has been facing an increasingly ageing workforce, and a tendency to lag in innovation and in the adoption of advanced technologies. To make construction more efficient, and safer, the sector needs to embrace new technologies and invest in research and innovation.
The UK Research and Innovation’s Transforming Construction Challenge is investing £170 million, matched by an industry commitment of £250 million, to accelerate innovation and help shift the construction sector to new ways of working.
This webinar is co-organised by the Construction Industry Council and the ICE Hong Kong Association, and supported by the UK Department for International Trade. In this webinar, we are delighted to invite Mr Sam Stacey, the Challenge Director – Transforming Construction at Innovate UK, to share with us his insight into how accelerating the development and commercialisation of digital and manufacturing technologies to support a more efficient, highly-skilled and productive construction industry.
Also, Mr Dev Amrtia, the CEO of nPlan, will share with us how they use artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithms to better predict, plan, and schedule construction projects. The AI project carried out by nPlan, Kier, and the University of Cambridge, has been awarded the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund for research and innovation projects.

Challenge Director – Transforming Construction at Innovate UK
Sam Stacey is Challenge Director – Transforming Construction at Innovate UK. He is leading the Transforming Construction challenge, a £170 million research and Innovation Investment, matched by £250 million from industry, to create new construction processes and techniques for building manufacture in the UK.
Before joining Innovate UK, Sam was Director of Innovation, Industrialisation, and Business Improvement at Skanska UK. He is a Chartered Structural Engineer with an MBA from Henley Business School and degrees in Civil Engineering, Architecture and Philosophy from Imperial College and Cambridge University.
CEO of nPlan
Dev is a chartered engineer with a range of experience in delivering international projects with Shell. He has seen megaprojects come to life, taking concepts through to engineering, funding, construction and handover. His experience in delivering projects spans 3 continents, working on the largest projects the energy industry has done. Following this, Dev was offered the opportunity to serve the UK government as a senior adviser where he launched and delivered the most influential review of the UK’s strategic policies to rapidly accelerate AI.
In 2017, Dev launched nPlan with the vision to empower decision making in construction. nPlan does this by enabling project teams to plan and execute their projects with certainty of the outcome. nPlan’s unique and exciting machine learning models are capable of learning from schedules of historic projects, to plan and predict the outcomes of future projects. nPlan was named as 1 of 5 AI startups to watch by London’s Evening Standard and 1 of 15 AI companies to watch in Europe by Forbes.
