Dunelm have been involved in the site investigations required for the development at the North Yorkshire polyhalite mining project on behalf of Sirius Minerals. They have been providing geotechnical and environmental information for the construction of a transportation tunnel and associated material processing plant and conveyor route from the mine site to a nearby port facility.
161 boreholes were drilled using a variety of techniques including cable percussion boring, rotary wireline coring, open hole drilling and sonic coring to a maximum depth of 50.00m. In addition to standard GI in-situ testing, further specialist testing in the form of self-boring pressuremeter, high pressure dilatometer, downhole geophysics (including cross hole geophysics, acoustic and optical televiewer, gamma and neutron density, sonic and P/S wave velocity) and electronically logged wireline packer permeability testing was carried out within the boreholes.
Due to the scale of the project and complex geology of the area, the investigation was challenging, and this talk will discuss the problems encountered, and solutions implemented to overcome them.
