The Fourth Industrial Revolution is characterised by the integration of physical, digital and biological systems.  This seminar will introduce four multi-million-pound national research programmes that are based in the northeast at Newcastle University and the University of Northumbria.

The centres are pioneering new digital and biological approaches to the design, construction and management of the built environment.

The four research programmes are:

  1. National green Infrastructure Facility (Claire Walsh) – An innovation and research facility to develop the engineering approaches for green infrastructure and urban spaces
  2. Urban Observatory (Luke Smith) – An innovation and research facility for the data-centric engineering, how big data can improve understanding of infrastructure, complex urban systems including recent work to support SAGE in assessing the effectiveness of social distancing
  3. Biotechnology in the Built Environment Hub (Martyn Dade-Robertson) – world first research centre looking at using biological systems and synthetic biology for construction and buildings
  4. International Centre for Connected Construction (Rebecca Strachan)
