So you want to be a Chartered Manager?

You may be a technical expert, a Chartered Engineer, but do you still need to develop people leadership skills for your next career step?

This workshop is designed to give you the information you need to become a Chartered Manager. We are joined by the Chartered Management Institute Wales for an insight into the Chartered Manager award and what the status means for you in your role.


  • Provide information about the Chartered Manager award and its benefits.
  • Discuss who Chartered status is suitable for.
  • Explore the different assessment routes.
  • How it has helped ICE Members career progression.

Neil Reynolds CMgr and Yvonne Murphy CMgr will both give a short outline of their routes to Chartered Manager and what they have gained from it.

Gary Metcalfe CMgr, FCMI, FIC

Gary Metcalfe

Gary is a high performing Organisational Development Practitioner, with a broad expertise in needs analysis, design, delivery and evaluation of interventions. Expert coach and mentor delivering focused, critical-friend style support to leaders at all levels in both large and small business environments. He works with charity leaders across Wales in his role as a volunteer consultant with Cranfield Trust.

He is a strong advocate of raising the professional standard of leadership in Wales and in recent years has seen him speaking at student events with Future Leaders and events to encourage women into leadership roles to address the gender imbalance on boards and in business. He is a Chartered Manager Advisor and Assessor and works with experienced leaders to reach the highest professional accolade in leadership and management. Gary stepped down as Chair of CMI Cymru/Wales on 1 March 2021, after many years supporting CMI and leaders in Wales. He will remain as the Wales Board HE Education advisor.

Yvonne Murphy BEng (Hons) CEng CEnv MICE CMgr MCMI

Yvonne Murphy

Yvonne is a Principal Engineer and Design Lead at Mott MacDonald designing and project managing a wide variety of schemes from river works/flood management to water and wastewater structures and networks. She has been an active member of the ICE in Wales, serving on committee in various roles since 2010. She also served as a General Member and Trustee of ICE Council for a three-year term (2015-2018).

Yvonne relocated back to her home country of Ireland in 2021, handing over the role of Chair to her successor Ken Evans. She continues to volunteer for ICE and is a Visitor, Trustee and Member of the Board of Management of the ICE Benevolent Fund. She volunteers as an Ambassador for STEM careers, organising events to encourage schoolchildren and young people. Yvonne is also a Mentor, Delegate Engineer, Supervising Civil Engineer, Sponsor and Reviewer for ICE professional reviews, helping to support our members working towards qualification. Yvonne is also a Chartered Manager.

Neil Reynolds

Neil is an accomplished C-suite executive recognised for building high performing teams and delivering improved results and mega projects for some of the world’s leading Fortune 500 engineering and construction companies. This has led to extended periods of working and living internationally which has shaped his character both professionally and personally and given him both diversity of thought and diversity of values. His inspiring work ethic has seen him lead businesses that are in duress back to prosperity, build singular working cultures that bridge continents, and apply his diverse experience to build teams, address gaps in skill sets and simplify complexities. This, coupled with his extensive board experience at multiple companies and my tireless charity ventures, ensure that he is a truly visionary leader with an emphasis on people.

Neil is a Chartered Civil Engineer and also holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Civil Engineering from the University of South Wales, a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE) and also a Chartered Companion of the Chartered Management Institute (CMgr CCMI) and a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv).
