Saving the planet: A UK wide resource revolution - and what’s your role? webinar

Watch this event

After David Attenborough’s Planet Earth, the realisation of the human impact on our environment has never been so great, and calls for action have never been so numerous. The backlash against plastic (and its global export and leakage into the rivers and oceans) needs closer reflection, as does the clamour from some quarters for deposit return schemes which have worked across the world.

Dr Adam Read, External Affairs Director, SUEZ, will take a closer look at plans in both the Europe and UK for a radical reform of waste and resource policy and reflect on where some of the proposals are heading, the possible weaknesses in the proposals, and the role that producers, local government, waste management companies, and the general public will have to play in delivering this resource revolution.

What do we need to know about extended producer responsibility, consistent collections and taxes for low recycled content in packaging?

He will also consider recent innovations, collaborations and changing business models and whether these disruptors can help with the delivering the much-needed resource revolution. Dr Read will finish off by looking at the UK in 2030 and beyond, the need for a resource sector deal which cements the role of the resources sector as a facilitator for green growth in other sectors (manufacturing, aviation, chemicals and agriculture). He will open up a debate about the future role of engineers, scientists and wider academia in supporting a new resources paradigm.

This event is co-hosted by CIWM and CIWEM.

Adam Read

Dr Read is External Affairs Director at SUEZ, responsible for Government liaison across the devolved administrations, key stakeholder relations, and the submission of consultation responses on behalf of SUEZ. Prior to joining SUEZ in September 2017, he had a successful career spanning environmental research and consultancy. After an undergraduate Geography degree from Exeter he spent his apprenticeship as a recycling officer with the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. He followed his passion for research into a PhD at Kingston University investing national policy implementation failure at a local scale and enjoyed it so much he stayed as a research fellow and lecturer, delivering numerous research and consultancy projects.

Having completed his PhD he was headhunted to ERM, to put his consultancy skills to good use in the development market on appropriate waste strategies in Mali, Costa Rica, Russia and Egypt. Subsequently he joined Hyder and grew a team of waste & resource specialists (many of whom were based in Cardiff) into one of the UK’s premium providers focused on behavioural change, recycling service design and infrastructure planning before joining AEA to expand their resources team, with an emphasis on due diligence, technology selection and the circular economy, which he did for over nine years, before joining SUEZ.

For the last 18 months he has been leading SUEZ’s work with UK Government on the development of the new Resources & Waste Strategy and the associated consultations, including deep dive analyses of EPR, DRS and consistent collections. He has also led numerous value chain workshops looking at EPR reform, governance, funding and performance, whilst working with leading brands on packaging innovation. He has been in the sector for almost 25 years specialising in municipal waste management strategy, recycling, contracts and consultation He is a Fellow of the RSA, a Fellow of the RGS, and a Fellow of CIWM. He is a social media enthusiast, a regular report and article author, and a workshop facilitator and conference chairman. He is a Chartered Resource & Waste Manager, and is CIWM’s incoming President, taking up the reins in June 2021.
