About this event

In the case of steel moment resisting frames, according to the design procedures suggested by the Eurocodes, the seismic energy dissipation can be concentrated in beams ends or in joints. In the former case, the design is aimed at promoting the formation of plastic zones in beams through the adoption of full-strength joints and over-strength columns while, in the latter case, the joints are designed to transfer to the columns only a part of the bending moment through the adoption of partial-strength joints.

The main shortcoming of either design approach is the concomitant structural damage which will occur, and which represents the main source of direct and indirect losses, in rare seismic events. In order to overcome these issues, recently, alternative low-damage strategies, based on the inclusion of dampers in connections of moment resisting frames, have been subject to extensive research at the University of Salerno and UCL. In this evening meeting, the speakers will present two novel technologies for low-damage seismic connections: the beam-to-column FREEDAM connection and the self-centering column base connection.


 

Speakers

Massimo Latour – University of Salerno

Massimo Latour is researcher at the University of Salerno (Italy). After the Master he won the selection for a Doctorate grant in Structural Engineering at University of Salerno where he got the PhD in 2011 with a thesis entitled "Theoretical and experimental analysis of dissipative beam-to-column joints in moment resisting steel frames”. In the same year, he became a post-doctoral fellow at Salerno University where he is currently working. His research activity mainly deals with seismic design and finite element modelling of steel structures and the development of strategies for supplemental damping to be applied in seismic zones.
 

Elena Elettore – University of Salerno

Elena Elettore is PhD student at the University of Salerno (Italy). She got her Master in 2019 at the University of Salerno in Building Engineering with a thesis that was part of a joint research project between the University of Salerno and UCL (London, UK), entitled "Design and analysis of steel seismic resilient frames equipped with self-centering column bases with friction devices”. She won the award for the best Master thesis in steel structures (CTA, Bologna, Italy, October 2019) and the SECED award (London, September 2019) for the best paper by a young author. After the Master she won the selection for a Doctorate grant in Structural Engineering at University of Salerno (November 2019).
