Preceding the Bayonne Bridge presentation, there will be a brief (15 minutes maximum) committee meeting of the GSA group which all are welcome to attend. Find out about the activities being organised and bring along any fresh ideas of your own.
In the ensuing talk, Paul van Hagen, Chief Engineer at Atkins, will describe the expansion of the Panama Canal which will allow for new, larger (Post-Panamax) ships with increased clearance requirements. These taller ships (up to 60m) will not be able to navigate beneath the Bayonne Bridge.
To accommodate increasingly larger vessels calling at the container ports located in New Jersey and Staten Island, the Port Authority looked at a number of options, including replacing the bridge entirely or constructing a tunnel in its place. But raising the roadway 19.5m within the confines of the classic arch structure was deemed to be the best approach. Paul van Hagen will talk about the project’s evolution & development.
