Reducing vehicle emissions is one of the pieces in the puzzle of tackling climate change and taking better care of our environment. Join us at the Ulster Museum to hear from Translink’s Director of Service Operations, Ian Campbell and General Manager Engineering, David Barnett. Ian and David will discuss transitioning to low emission vehicles and incorporating latest technologies.

The presentation will include:

  • An overview of Translink and Public Transport in NI
  • Global warning and air quality – the need for change
  • An overview of bus and train technology development
  • Translink’s Clean Air, Zero Carbon Road Map
  • Case studies – “investment in public transport works”
  • Challenges ahead

Ian Campbell

Ian Campbell

Ian is a Mechanical Engineering Graduate from Queen’s University Belfast, a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, Fellow of IMechE and Fellow of the Institute of Railway Operators.

After university, he joined British Rail undertaking a number of Engineering Management roles in England, Scotland and Wales. Following privatisation, Ian worked as Fleet Engineer for Central Trains in the English Midlands before returning to Northern Ireland in 1999 to join Translink.

Within Translink Ian has undertaken the roles of Head of Rail Fleet Engineering, Head of Rail Operations, General Manager – Engineering and is currently Director of Service Operations. In this role he is responsible for the delivery of Translink’s bus and rail services in Northern Ireland.

David Barnett

David Barnett

David Barnett has recently joined Translink as General Manager – Engineering. David’s background is from the bus industry, having worked for Wrightbus for 22 years.

David is graduate of Queen’s University Belfast with both a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA. David is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of IMechE. In Wrightbus his roles have included Engineering Director, Aftersales Director and Product Director. Most recently David was the Business Development Director responsible for leading the company’s activities in low carbon and zero emission vehicles. Prior to this he successfully led the New Routemaster project and the StreetCar for Las Vegas.

As General Manager – Engineering, David is responsible for the fleet strategies, maintenance, overhaul and service availability of Translink's fleets of buses, coaches and trains.
