Construction for this £80m Network Rail project was completed in May 2023 as a robust, long-term solution to rising sea levels and increasingly severe weather events to improve the resilience of the railway through Dawlish.

Key elements of the scheme are:

  • the 415m second phase of the sea wall and high-level promenade
  • accessibility improvements to Dawlish station
  • a new Colonnade Viaduct pedestrian bridge over Dawlish Water
  • spillway carrying the river to the beach
  • accessible footbridge with lifts under construction in Dawlish station.

The tour will walk the length of the sea wall scheme, highlighting the different construction techniques that were used, the problematic issues that had to be overcome during design and/or construction, the interaction with local community and stakeholders, Network Rail and the location of the site between the sea and live railway, tidal windows, carbon saving solutions, etc.

A limited number of spaces are available, so early booking is advised. Attendees are not required to wear PPE, however, appropriate footwear for walking on the beach and waterproof jackets are advised.

Attendees must be comfortable walking a reasonable distance on the public walkway, up/down steps and on to the beach to access the full tour. However, a reduced part of the tour will be accessible for persons with reduced mobility.

The tour has been organised by the ICE Exeter City Club. Everyone is welcome.

After the tour, feel free to join the event organisers for a self-funded drink and social (venue TBC).
