Welcome, students, to the sustainability bite-size lecture!
In this informative session, we will explore the crucial concepts of sustainability and its significance to the job of a civil engineer. With the help of a group of graduates from Arup, we will give you a succinct overview of what, in practice, a civil engineer uses in terms of the principles of sustainable development and how the impact can be modelled using software. Two case studies will be explored, so that students can quickly understand how sustainability is embraces in current practice.
By the end of this brief conversation, you will have a good grounding in sustainability principles, some examples of how they can be applied, and suggestions for further reading to deepen your knowledge. For anyone who wished to deepen their knowledge further, after this initial “bitesize”, ICE recommends the series “5 weeks course/sustainability“, starting in September 2024, over a period of five weeks.
Sustainability is one of the attributes required by the Institution of Civil Engineers, at professional level.
