Overview

Dr Jean Venables CBE FREng CEng CEnv FICE MCIWEM FCGI will talk about how can we achieve carbon zero in the management of water.

Many Institutions, including ICE, have signed up to a Climate Emergency Declaration and one of the targets is to minimise carbon. I want to explore how engineers can contribute to reducing both capital and operational carbon in the management of water.

Engineers influence the use and disposal of water both as individuals and as professionals. Engineers conceive solutions to clients’ problems, design and specify the components and in so doing determine the carbon footprint of their solution: in most cases for many years. Change has to start now with civil engineering infrastructure if the carbon target for 2030/50 is to be met.
