Yvonne’s theme for her year as Chair is Mentoring and Skills, the most precious resource in our industry is our people and their knowledge. The range of projects encompassed within “civil engineering” is vast, necessitating a skilled workforce from a diversity of backgrounds to meet specific needs. Civil engineering projects are also facing a time of great challenge – economic and political uncertainties, digital revolutions, climate change, urbanisation and sustainability drivers.
Engineering in the UK is facing a shortfall of skilled persons to deliver projects, with a large portion of experienced technical people retiring in the next 10 years. Recent statistics from Engineering UK indicate that the shortage of engineers in the UK will rise to over 180,000 by 2022, as those concerned about changes to immigration policies choose to take up work elsewhere.
Therefore, now more than ever, we have a duty to pass on our knowledge to others to ensure our profession remains at the forefront, that the next generation of engineers stay the course and we as members of the engineering community remain dedicated and engaged life-long learners.
