Overview

As Formula 1, Moto GP and other motorsports increase in popularity worldwide, the ICE South Asia ECNet are delighted to hear from engineers that facilitate the excitement of these high speed races.

Our guest speaker is asphalt specialist Dr David Woodward who will present a detailed overview of surface design for racetracks used in motorsport.

David has 40 years’ experience in highway engineering materials and is Reader in Infrastructure Engineering at Ulster University where he teaches the civil engineering courses.

David is also chief scientific officer for R3 Ltd who offer specialist transfer of knowledge from academic research to real world needs in areas of roads, runways and racing circuits.

His presentation will cover the key design elements of a racetrack including:

  • The differences in designing highway surfaces versus racing circuits
  • How engineers facilitate those high speed races
  • An overview from initial design through to what becomes a racetrack
  • The role of simulation in track building, showing how drivers are test-driving circuits before they're even built
  • The construction of racetracks
  • Why certain aggregates and certain asphalts are used
  • How to predict and then measure evolution of surface characteristics
  • How cars and motorbikes interact differently. How do street circuits differ?
  • How tracks are prepared for their big event.

This event is organised by the ICE South Asia Early Careers Network. All members are welcome to attend, though priority will be given to Student, Graduate and Technician members based in South Asia.
