Overview

Many of us have roots in small towns. We might have arisen from there, have left them, but still have wishes and interests in their development and well-being. The small town administration and landowners around are struggling against diminishing resources, deteriorating environmental conditions, insufficient public amenities, and the loss of intelligent youth seeking better prospects in larger cities.

It appears that small towns are no longer sustainable. However, this trend can now be turned around with new techniques from the digital world, stakeholder team building, a systems thinking approach, and the input of planners and engineers using software.

Recently, guidelines on the Sustainable Development Goals have been developed by UNESCO to serve this purpose. The Commonwealth Association of Planners, Architects, and Local Government, along with UN-Habitat, has developed a toolkit, consolidating a simple and streamlined methodology that shapes sustainable growth despite the scale and pace of the trend. Vensim is a systems thinking software, available now, which can model the well-being of impoverished communities.

There is now a systematic knowledge of the subject, which young professionals can acquire to not only come to the rescue of small towns but also find employment opportunities for themselves. Town administration, influencers, and landowners of the area can acquire this know-how to better organise these programmes.

Participants will receive the course materials upon registration, allowing sufficient time to review the content before the course begins.

Course content:

  • Today’s digital world bringing connectivity to remote small towns
  • Diverting resources back to small towns and building stakeholders together
  • UNESCO Sustainable Development Goals in assistance of underprivileged habitats
  • Commonwealth Planners and Architects’ toolkit for sustainable urban growth
  • Vensim Systems Thinking software on financing projects in impoverished communities

Programme:

  • Day 1: Course discourse and instruction
  • Day 2: Presentations from volunteering participants based on assignments given on Day 1, followed by discussions
