Overview

Lyon in France and Turin in Italy are two major cities when it comes to European exchanges and economy. Currently, merchandises and goods are mainly carried via trucks between these two locations.

The TELT project is aimed to reduce the traffic on the existing highway by allowing a fast rail connection crossing the Alps relief with a 57,5 km long twin tube tunnel (45 km in France & 12,5 km in Italy).

The construction of this tunnel has been ongoing since October 2021. In addition to traditional methods such as explosives, 7 tunnel boring machines will be used to excavate the work sections.

This project is very challenging due to various aspects: the depth, the geology, the location, the length.

Our three speakers will introduce you to the day-to-day engineering themes encountered to achieve this gigantic milestone and deliver the project, meeting the highest standards of the construction field.

Following the lecture, there will be a networking session with food sponsored by ARX and drinks sponsored by VINCI at ICE Kendal's bar.

Emmanuel Humbert

Emmanuel HUMBERT holds a Master's degree in civil engineering from the French National School for State Civil Works. He has worked in the tunnelling industry for more than two decades.

After working for nearly fifteen years at CETU (Center for Tunnel Studies), the French government's technical centre for road tunnels, he joined TELT (Owner of the Lyon-Turin tunnel) as head of the construction department, where he coordinates work on French construction sites.

His experience includes road and rail tunnel construction and has been accumulated over the course of many tunnelling projects as a project engineer or project manager. He has developed extensive professional skills in tunnel design, geotechnical engineering, and project risk and contract management.

He is also a lecturer for postgraduate courses at French universities on the subject of tunnelling and tunnel boring machines. Emmanuel is involved in ITA and is active in the French Tunnelling Association.

Adrian Fontana

Adrian Fontana has been significantly involved in the construction of the longest tunnels in the world for the past 20 years: the Lötschberg Base Tunnel, the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the Ceneri Base Tunnel and the Brenner Base Tunnel.

His experience covers all phases of design, and he held all relevant functions up to project manager at the Ceneri Base Tunnel and the Euralpin Lyon-Turin Tunnel also as consultant to the client.

Adrian Fontana is an expert in contract management and processing. He contractually operated the complex major construction sites of the transalpine rail link in three languages - French, German and Italian. Thanks to his extensive knowledge in underground construction, he now has a universally recognised expertise and leadership skills.

He joined Pini Swiss in 2007. Since 2020, Adrian Fontana has been a member of the Pini Group Executive Board and Head of the Construction Management Division. Adrian Fontana studied in the USA and Fribourg and holds a degree in civil engineering ETS. He is a Swiss citizen. His main references include:

  • BSL – Lötschberg Base Tunnel, Switzerland (34 km)
  • ATG – AlpTransit, Ceneri Base Tunnel, Switzerland (15,6 km)
  • BBT SE – Brenner Base Tunnel, Austria (57 km)
