Keynote Presentation by Dr Christopher Power
Meeting the climate change challenge to transportation infrastructure geotechnical assets?
Dr Christopher Power, Technical Director at Mott MacDonald will explore how the UK’s vast strategic transportation infrastructure network is supported by, or runs through geotechnical assets (earthworks). The strategic road network in England comprises nearly 50,000 such assets, and the rail network in Great Britain has nearly 200,000. Whilst these assets vary considerably in age and performance, they are all exposed to our fickle maritime climate: the key driver for their deterioration and increasingly, their failure. While the management of these assets is challenging at the best of times, due to the complex geology of the UK and variable standards of asset construction, the changing climate presents a further challenge for asset owners to address. This presentation will outline the scale of this challenge, and describe how two major geotechnical asset owners are rising to face it.
