Overview
Join ICE East Midlands Graduates and Students Committee for a presentation about this award-winning project, Next Generation Design – The Social Shell.
The Social Shell, the Small Project Award winner of the ICE East Midlands Merit Awards in 2020, is a timber pavilion. Promoting diversity and better representation within the construction industry, students were invited to join an interactive weekend workshop to gain an insight into engineering and compete to design a demountable pavilion to be displayed in Nottingham City Centre.
Arup and Leonard Design Architects partnered to develop the student’s concept into the final design. The design stayed honest to the original concept, while utilising parametric design, digital collaboration, and fabrication techniques to successfully deliver an exemplary piece of sustainable and innovative design.
This presentation will discuss this award-winning project from finding the pavilion concept and design development, through to the construction, inspiring the next generation of engineers, architects, and designers.
