Overview

Yorkshire and Humber region is the largest region in the United Kingdom. With over 4,700 ICE members spread geographically across the region, we recognise the importance of localised hubs, where members can participate and interact with each other.

In this endeavour, we are establishing four branches across Yorkshire and Humber. After launching the first two branches covering York and North Yorkshire and also West Yorkshire  we  now have the launch of the South Yorkshire branch with a launch meeting on Wednesday 12 February.

If you would like to know more about this branch, live locally or within the geographical boundary of this branch, please join us.

We will hear from the South Yorkshire branch chair, Bryan Penny.  Bryan will be joined by the ICE regional director for Yorkshire and Humber and members of the branch committee.

We encourage members from South Yorkshire to join us to seek opportunities of how to get involved with the Institution of Civil Engineers in their local hub.

Bryan Penny CEng MICE

Bryan Penny is a senior associate working in the Mott MacDonald, Buildings unit in Sheffield.  He has had a career in civil engineering spanning 30 years, starting work as a graduate site engineer before moving to engineering consultancy to work on restoration of coal mining sites and environmental improvements to water courses and rivers.

Over the past 10 years, he has been occupied with flood defence schemes in the Yorkshire and Humber region, working with both local authorities and the Environment Agency.

As a past chair of the Yorkshire and Humber region Bryan is passionate about the role of the ICE in supporting civil engineers share knowledge and experience and to showcase the excellent work done in the region building and maintaining the infrastructure necessary for a thriving society.

There is an increasing focus within clients and communities for providing schemes that bring environmental and ecological benefits, schemes which also minimise the impacts of construction and use low-carbon materials, all while ensuring optimum value.

Bryan’s role in leading and supporting the development of flood alleviation schemes requires constant updating of his knowledge to stay abreast of the latest legislation and regulations as well as developments in industry best practices. He feels it is important to take some time to reflect on strategic issues and consider what the future challenges will be as we move further towards climate uncertainty
