Overview

Kuran Basra and Sinan Pheby will give us an insight on projects at Sellafield Ltd which will continue to boost safety and support the ongoing site remediation.

Kuran will address the latest advancements in the governance of AI technology at Sellafield, acknowledging the recent rapid evolution of this field. Additionally, he will showcase examples of how AI technology is being explored and implemented within the organisation.

Sinan has been responsible for electrical distribution network improvements that will ensure Sellafield is future-ready. Sinan's presentation will give an overview of the Electrical Distribution Upgrade Project at Sellafield and the multi-discipline challenges in modernising critical infrastructure on a complex nuclear site.

There will be a Q&A session following the two presentations.

Kuran Basra

After graduating from the University of Manchester with a master's degree in civil and structural engineering, Kuran started his career at Sellafield Ltd in 2014. He’s held various positions within the company, including structural analyst, structural designer, geotechnical engineer, site construction engineer, and design lead. During this time, he has also achieved chartered status with the ICE.

In his previous roles, Kuran contributed to multi-million-pound nuclear projects, collaborating with supply chain organisations and utilising NEC3/4 contracts.

In his current role, Kuran is developing the governance framework for AI development and use within the organisation, recognising the critical importance of ensuring robust, ethical, and compliant AI practices, which aims to safeguard data privacy and security, ensure transparency and accountability, promote ethical standards, mitigate biases, and to align with regulatory and industry best practices.

Sinan Pheby

Sinan graduated from University of Liverpool in 2012 with a master’s degree in civil engineering. He began his career with Sanderson Watts Associates, gaining valuable experience in the commercial sector whilst working on numerous projects ranging from principal bridge inspections to structural analysis of new build structures, including the Leicester Market Food Hall. 

He transitioned into the nuclear sector in 2016, contributing to multiple nuclear projects across numerous power stations including Bradwell, Trawsfynydd, Dounreay and Sellafield. 

In 2019 Sinan was seconded to Arup as a project engineer to work on the Electrical Network Upgrade Project and was responsible for completing the detailed design of numerous secondary interconnector zones. In 2022 he officially joined Sellafield as a lead CS&A engineer on the EDNUP project, having delivered numerous design packages for construction. 

In his current role, Sinan’s involved in the acceptance and delivery of the final sets of generator modules to the Sellafield site, and is preparing to transition into the Sellafield Integration Team to ensure a seamless handover of the project and aid in setting up for future multi-million pound frameworks.
