Twenty projects from across the East Midlands were judged by a panel of experienced civil engineers and members of ICE’s East Midlands Graduates & Students Committee, chaired by ICE East Midlands Senior Vice Chair, Matt Huddleston.

The awards recognise excellence and innovation in civil engineering across the region and beyond. They are ICE's main opportunity to draw attention to the hidden benefits of civil engineering to society and showcase the most innovative, creative and sustainable contributions engineers make to the wealth our region.

Each project entered for up to 3 of the following categories: medium projects from £750k to £10m, small projects less the £750K, team achievement, studies & research and for ICE’s bicentennial year a ‘Shaping the World’ award was introduced.

The William Kemp Award is presented to someone who has made a sustained and exceptional contribution to civil engineering in the East Midlands over the course of their career.  It isn’t presented every year in order to recognise that those who receive it have truly made an exceptional contribution.

High flying young engineers and teams who demonstrated superb communication skills, dedication and commitment to their studies and made a significant contribution to their profession were also celebrated at the awards.

Karen Notman, ICE East Midlands Chair 2017-18 said: “This annual event is a great opportunity to celebrate the civil engineering profession and the inspirational people and teams who are often unseen, but who help our society to function and improve our lives.

“These awards are a chance for everyone who entered to feel proud of their hard work and dedication which often goes unnoticed by the general public.”
