ICE London has launched this year’s #ICanEngineer competition focusing on stadiums. Open for entries until Monday 12 October, we are calling all future engineers to design or redesign a sporting stadium using our brief and criteria.
The new or improved stadium will complement London's fantastic existing venues, such as the Olympic Park, Wimbledon and Wembley and keep London on the world sporting stage. The venue will need to be versatile to host prestigious sporting events like the Olympic, Invictus Games and the Euros/World cups.
Now in its fifth year, the contest – which is open to 12-15-year-olds across London – encourages students to work in teams or submit individual entries that showcase their critical thinking and creativity.
The judges will award marks based on innovation and technology; materials and structures; environmental impact; social impact; and the links to surrounding infrastructure.
Vilma Marques, ICE London Education and Inspiration Executive, said:
"This year due to the pandemic we wanted to make the #ICanEngineer competition more accessible to young people. Whether you are at school or being home tutored, children across London have the opportunity to use their knowledge of STEM and apply it to a civil engineering scenario.
By doing so, we hope young people will see engineering as a rewarding career and its importance in solving challenges facing society"
Entries will be accepted from now until Monday 12 October 2020, with the winners will be announced during Tomorrow Engineers Week in November.
All successful shortlisted entries will be invited to an award ceremony (pending government social distancing guidelines) with an opportunity for the students to talk to real engineers and hear first-hand their experiences.
The #ICanEngineer competition is part of the Future Engineers Scheme run by the ICE London Graduate and Students Committee. Industry support is being provided by WSP and Mott MacDonald.
