ICE Further Learning Exam
ICE Further Learning Exam
The ICE Exam pilot aims to develop a new further learning option for engineers who want to become Chartered Engineers (CEng MICE) and have:
  • BEng (Hons) degree or equivalent assessed qualification
  •  4-5 years (minimum) of practical experience in the civil engineering industry

Becoming professionally qualified requires a combination of your academic achievements, work experience (also called Initial Professional Development) and an assessment (your Professional Review).

The academic qualifications usually required for CEng MICE are at Master's level, either an MEng degree or an MSc with an accredited Bachelor's degree.

Passing our Further Learning Exam would offer an alternative way to meet the academic requirements to become CEng MICE if you hold a BEng (Hons) degree or equivalent – instead of opting for the Master's degree option. You would then be able to complete your Initial Professional Development (IPD) and progress to Professional Review

Volunteer candidates and examiners needed for second pilot phase

Following a successful first pilot in 2019, with an 82% pass rate for the exam, we have agreed to run a second pilot in March 2021 and we are inviting volunteer candidates and examiners to apply.

The second ICE exam pilot is being offered free of charge to candidates, representing an estimated saving of over £1,500. Candidates will enjoy access to online training material that covers the entire syllabus for the exam, developed by ICE Training.

However, places are limited to a maximum of 40 candidates.

Examiners will get an opportunity to help shape the development of this new option and play a vital role in supporting civil engineers to progress towards professional qualification. You will be asked to attend a full-day briefing and mark at least 5 exam scripts (average 1 hour per script).

The second pilot exam will be held in London on 1 March 2021. Please note that at the moment it is not possible to sit the ICE exam online.

Who can apply?

Candidates can be either Incorporated Members (IEng MICE) or Graduate members (GMICE) who hold an accredited BEng (Hons) degree or equivalent assessed qualification.

Examiners should be current Chartered Civil Engineers.

How participating can help you

ICE Further Learning
Steven McCullagh, Civil Engineer

"I would definitely recommend the ICE Exam. It gave me the confidence and I felt better equipped as an engineer after completing it.

"The course was very well planned out, including a good spectrum of reading material and modules. It was great CPD and contributes to keeping up-to-date with the latest concepts, advancements and key legislation for the industry. Sitting the exam itself was stress free as the ICE communicated what to expect very well."

"I gained satisfaction from helping young professionals become qualified.

"Marking Further Learning Exam papers provided a new CPD experience: I learned through training and the guidance I assimilated, from the papers I read and from the process of agreeing candidate grades with fellow markers."
