The technician scholarship, which forms part of the ICE’s Queen’s Jubilee Scholarship Trust (QUEST), recognises ability and potential together with a financial boost of up to £1000.

All scholars are working towards professional qualification as either Engineering Technician (EngTech MICE) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng MICE).

High calibre of scholars across regions and sectors

Hazel Sanders, membership development officer for London and South East, helped interview QUEST Technician scholars in her region this year.

Sanders said she was impressed by the quality of the applications: “Many scholars are very early on in their career but are already getting involved with the ICE, carrying out STEM activities as well as studying and having responsible roles within their organisations.

“It is wonderful to see so many enthusiastic scholars coming into the industry and already starting to make a real difference. I look forward to seeing all they can achieve in the coming years for their companies, for society and for their institution.”

Jen Hopkins, membership development officer for Scotland & Northern Ireland, agreed: “It's a real highlight of our year to engage with early career members so early on in their career.

“It's extremely encouraging to see the various ways applicants are already demonstrating engagement with the ICE across our knowledge, networking, professional qualification support and STEM events.”

Hopkins was impressed that some applicants had already gained their EngTech MICE qualification while others planned to achieve this as their next career milestone.

“We have been very impressed by their insight into key challenges facing the industry, particularly by their drive and enthusiasm to address the ongoing climate emergency,” Hopkins said.

“It's hugely motivating to see the high calibre of scholars across all regions and civil engineering sectors.”

About the ICE QUEST programme

The ICE QUEST programme was set up in 1977 to encourage and support education in civil engineering. Over the years it has supported thousands of people in their civil engineering career.

There are QUEST scholarships supporting members and students to learn at all stages of their career. Applications are currently open for the ICE QUEST undergraduate scheme.

The next round of QUEST Technician applications opens in autumn 2024.
