An exciting competition spearheaded by ICE President Professor Anusha Shah aims to use art to engage the next generation of engineers.
The ICE has extended the entry deadline for Ikigai 2024 to 11.59pm, Tuesday 24 September.
If you're passionate about making sure the infrastructure we build is nature- and people-positive, inspire a young person and get involved in this once-in-a-lifetime, never-before-seen competition.
This is the first-ever creative arts festival the ICE has organised, and looks to make crucial connections between civil engineering, nature and the arts.
Teams of two - with one person being aged under 18 years and one over 18, are invited to share their creativity by entering the Ikigai 2024: a nature- and people-positive world arts and music festival.
By entering, they’ll be in with a chance to win one of five £500 prizes and an exclusive opportunity to present their entry in person at the iconic Great Hall at One Great George Street (OGGS) in London.
The competition is inspired by ICE President Professor Anusha Shah’s presidential theme for the year, 'Making connections for a nature- and people-positive world', which encourages engineers to keep nature and people at the heart of infrastructure solutions.
What are the competition categories?
The competition hopes to spark creativity in younger people, helping them to harness the power of art to understand the symbiotic relationship between people, nature and infrastructure.
There are five categories in the competition, and teams of two can submit entries in more than one category.
Competition entries should focus on theming their entry around creating a nature- and people-positive world, with a focus on infrastructure.
The categories are:
- Poetry
- Songs (with or without instruments)
- Photography
- One-minute short film
- Painting, drawing or collage in 2D (excluding digital art)
Ikigai 2024 festival
Three finalists will be chosen from each category to present their entries at a special Ikigai 2024 festival.
The event will feature speeches from key sustainability personalities and a unique nature and sustainability themed fashion show at the ICE’s prestigious headquarters, OGGS, in London.
At the event, taking place on Monday 14 October 2024, a panel of judges, including Dragon’s Den star Deborah Meaden, will present awards to the winners.
Winning teams will be awarded the coveted Ikigai 2024 trophy and a cash prize of £500, and runners-up will receive certificates and an ICE goody bag.
Finalists will also be able to tour the historic OGGS building and meet the ICE President along with judge and keynote speaker Deborah Meaden.
