This project seeks to support leaders of complex projects by identifying the skillsets they need and routes to securing them.
The ICE’s Systems Approach to Infrastructure Delivery (SAID) programme was first developed in 2020 with a review of the benefits of applying systems thinking to the delivery of large infrastructure projects.
It considered the fact that most new physical assets will need to be integrated into existing networks and services.
It also considered how asset owners are also seeking a growing range of outcomes from infrastructure – not just the delivery of a physical structure.
The second SAID report, in 2021, was a response to requests for the ICE to provide more practical insight into how to deliver a systems approach.
It used six case studies to evaluate the real-world practicalities of adopting the SAID principles.
What does this working paper cover?
This working paper for SAID Part 3 advocates that delivering increasingly complex and technology-driven infrastructure projects will require a broader range of adaptable leaders.
This project seeks to support these leaders by identifying the skillsets they will need and the routes to securing them.
The working paper is based on the learnings from SAID Parts 1 and 2, desk research, a literature review, input from the ICE Community Advisory Boards (CABs) and from a meeting of prominent infrastructure leaders.
Its purpose is to invite ICE members and other stakeholders from the infrastructure and adjacent sectors to contribute their views.
These will inform the next stage of the project and help shape the outputs it will finally produce.
