Join us in a live digital discussion session exploring how and why achieving a professional management qualification can boost your personal career journey and also make a critical contribution to the overall success of your organisation.

We are delighted to be joined by Yvonne Murphy (principal engineer, Mott MacDonald) who will share her fascinating career path to the very top of the engineering sector. Yvonne has personal experience of gaining a Chartered Management qualification and during the session, we will explore how she has applied her academic learning to real-life work situations. Gary Metcalfe (lecturer, University of Wales Trinity Saint David) will be also sharing his expert knowledge of the Chartered Management programmes available to ICE members and the session will be co-hosted by Kathryn Austin (chartered member, CIPD) and Keith Jones (ICE director, Wales Cymru).

Kath is a Chartered Member of CIPD, a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and Chair of the CMI Cymru Board. Kath’s is also the Chief People & Marketing Director of the Heart with Smart Group (HwS), the UK’s leading Franchise operator of Pizza Hut Restaurants and itsu employing over 4000 people. Kath’s combined role brings together the experience and brand agenda from both the perspectives of the customer and employee.

Kath has worked internationally for over 25 years in a range of senior and board level positions for global brands including British Airways, Barclays, Lloyds and Yum! (Pizza Hut, KFC, Taco Bell). Along with her husband Pete, Kath also manages a number of local businesses in her home town of Cardigan, and mentors entrepreneurial start-ups across West Wales. Kath has developed a broad perspective on business from micro, to global multi-billion organisations and believes that irrespective of size or sector, success boils down the same challenge and opportunity of finding, developing and retaining great people.

Kath’s driving mission is to enable social mobility through education and is passionate about the CMI agenda of creating professional managers and leaders.

Yvonne Murphy

Yvonne Murphy is a Principal Engineer and Design Lead at Mott MacDonald specialising in water engineering.

Yvonne has designed and project managed a wide variety of schemes from river works/flood management to water and wastewater structures and networks.

She is a Chartered Civil Engineer, Manager and Environmentalist and has an ongoing active involvement with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), having served as committee member and Past Chair of ICE Wales, General Member and Trustee of ICE Council for a three-year term (2015-2018) and as Visitor, Trustee and Member of the Board of Management of the ICE Benevolent Fund.

Yvonne is currently ICE Benevolent Fund Chair, ICE Republic of Ireland committee member and Country Representative, and is a Mentor, Delegate Engineer, Supervising Civil Engineer, Sponsor and Reviewer for ICE professional reviews, helping to support ICE members working towards professional qualification. She is also an Ambassador for STEM careers, organising events to encourage schoolchildren and young people.
