Overview

The presentation will explain the chemistry of Microbiologically Induced Corrosion (MIC), or Biogenic Corrosion, in large diameter sewer tunnels and infrastructure and the approaches being adopted around the world to resist this concrete deterioration in new sewer infrastructures.

The presentation will incorporate the author’s experiences of conducting tests and advising on concrete mixes for MIC resistant concrete in the Deep Tunnel Sewer System (DTSS), Phase 2 project in Singapore, the Central Interceptor Tunnel (CIT) in Auckland, New Zealand and the Dubai Strategic Sewer Tunnels (DSST), UAE.

The results of extensive testing have indicated the exceptional performance in resisting MIC of a particular type of cement-free geopolymer concrete called Earth Friendly Concrete (EFC) that has been developed in Australia over the past 15 years.
