Overview

Almost 40% of all global energy-related emissions are due to buildings and construction (Arnold, 2020).

The civil engineering profession has, therefore, through its work in creating infrastructure and the built environment, been a significant accomplice, albeit unwittingly for the most part, in climate impact.

However, the significance of buildings and construction in climate change now also puts us in a unique position to help combat the climate crisis.

This webinar will address some of the main principles of low-carbon approaches to civil engineering. It will also give examples of how these can be put into practice in some of the main branches of civil engineering – to help civil engineers to play a major role in combatting climate change by working toward more sustainable infrastructure.

The event will include the following presentations:

  • Principles and concepts of low-carbon Civil Engineering

Approaches/examples in:

  • Structural Engineering
  • Transportation Engineering
  • Water Engineering
  • Construction

Elliot Neale

Elliot is an Incorporated Civil Engineer with a background in major civil engineering projects including the US Embassy in London, Crossrail and East West Rail. He has predominantly been based in Contracting, managing direct delivery workforces in all lifecycle stages of a project.

His role in Jacobs is as a member of a Construction Advisory team, with a core aim of providing buildability assurance in design and providing key efficiencies in project metrics: carbon, cost and time. Key project involvements in this role include the Palace of Westminster Restoration and Renewal and Eirgrid’s 400kV Kildare to Meath Power Upgrade. Elliot is a recognised Subject Matter Expert in Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) and aims to demonstrate the benefits of this approach on his projects.
