Event organised by Central Dredging Association
Bramley Moore Dock was opened in 1848 and became a major part of the Port of Liverpool as the dock system was gradually extended to the north of the city. By the 1980’s, the area went into decline and remained as such until recently with only part of the surrounding land being used by a dredging company and the dock itself being used as a mooring for tugs operating out in the port.
In 2021, Everton Football Club gained planning permission to build a 52,888-seat stadium on land reclaimed by infilling the dock.
This presentation aims to provide an overview of the operation including preparation works, filling, compacting, and testing in order to allow follow on works to commence for the construction of the new stadium.
Post-lecture networking drinks will take place in the ICE Kendal’s bar.

Laing O’Rourke
principal engineer
Andy has been working for Laing O’Rourke for over 24 years and possesses unrivalled knowledge in engineering civil and structural solutions through both design and delivery of major complex projects.
Andy joined Laing O’Rourke in 1998 where he started as Site Engineer on the Manchester Aquatics Centre which would ultimately be the swimming venue for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
Following a stint on the A55 Dual Carriageway Project on the Island of Anglesey in North Wales, Andy returned to Manchester to further bolster preparation works for the Commonwealth Games where he was site engineer for the City of Manchester Stadium project (Etihad Stadium).
Always preferring to work with the technical engineering team, Andy remained committed to Laing O’Rourke and progressed through the ranks from Site Engineer to Senior Engineer and eventually to Principal Engineer.
He acquired extensive experience in the delivery of major mixed use projects such as The Rock in Bury and Liverpool One where he began to specialise in Lifting Operations and Temporary Works which became fundamental skills linked to the business’ desire to design for manufacture and assembly.
More recently, Andy’s experience and track record have helped Laing O’Rourke successfully secure and deliver some prestigious projects such as Manchester Airport Transformation Programme, The Factory in Manchester, and the New Everton Stadium at Bramley Moore Dock in Liverpool where he was package lead for the dock filling operation required to reclaim the land on which the venue is currently being constructed.
