Overview

An introduction to this transformational refurbishment project by Stuart MacKellar of LDN Architects, highlighting the architectural design considerations to meet the client aspirations and the various main elements to the design proposals.  

Ben Adam, Narro project director and CARE Engineer, will then present the structural implications of the key interventions, including the challenges faced by the design team and contractor to make them a reality.

Ben Adam

Ben Adam was appointed managing director of Narro in July 2017. He has over twenty-five years’ experience in the design of all types of building structures and over twelve years post-chartered experience. 

Ben has a keen interest in architectural engineering and is an expert in refurbishment and remedial works of existing buildings. He is also experienced in all manner of construction techniques and materials. He also has a major interest in sustainable design and construction methods, and in particular the role engineers can play in the design process to deliver truly sustainable buildings over the full lifespan of the structure. 

Many of Ben’s projects have involved the complex refurbishment and conservation of historic buildings in land-locked, city-centre sites. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of both the Institution of Structural Engineers and Institution of Civil Engineers. He is a Certifier of Design (Building Structures) in accordance with the SER Certification scheme and is also a Conservation Accredited Engineer on the ICE CARE Register.

Stuart MacKellar

Stuart is one of two partners responsible for leading LDN Architects’ Inverness studio. He spent much of his early career with the internationally renowned Foster + Partners, where he was part of a team responsible for delivering notable UK and international projects including Quartermile, Edinburgh and the OVO Arena, Glasgow. Stuart relocated to the Highlands in 2011 and has since worked with numerous client groups throughout the North of Scotland. He joined LDN in 2015 and became a Partner in 2018.

Recently, Stuart has been responsible for leading a number of major regeneration projects in the region, including the £30m transformation of Inverness Castle and its new Sustainable Energy Centre, the restoration of Inverness Town House, the creation of Inverness Creative Academy, the redevelopment of Elgin Town Hall, and a new community hub and cinema in Huntly. Combined, Stuart’s experience has allowed him to become adept at finding and delivering creative strategies that unlock culturally important places for public use.
