Overview

The James Rennie Medal recognises the best Chartered Professional Review candidate of the year.

This year’s final will feature ICE’s top three Chartered Professional Review (CPR) and CPR (Progressive) candidates of 2025. They will each present and defend their CPR reports to an audience.

The three finalists are:

  • James Wright CEng MICE, senior structural engineer at AECOM, will present on his role in delivering the 2023 Serpentine Pavilion. Titled À table, the timber-framed structure has nine radial scalloped edges to form a communal and events space. The Serpentine Pavilion is an annual commission in London’s Kensington Gardens, featuring a temporary and demountable structure designed with a different signature architect each year. James will explore the challenges of managing an innovative, low-carbon design within a highly compressed programme, which requires close collaboration with the client, architect and contractor from the outset.
  • Jack Roberts CEng MICE, senior geotechnical engineer at Mott MacDonald Spain, will discuss his experiences on the investigation into a failing structure and the lessons learnt from working and living around the globe. He will also touch on his voluntary role as team lead and project manager for the Kisaro Suspension Bridge development in Rwanda.
  • Liam Eagle CEng MICE, engineer at Ward & Burke Construction, will present on his role as the engineering design lead on a £13m United Utilities AMP7 scheme in Bolton, connecting two sewer overflows to reduce spills into Bradshaw Brook. A 900m long 1.83m ID pipejacked tunnel provided 2,900m³ of stormwater storage along with the key benefits of cutting embodied carbon and minimising disruption within sensitive parkland when compared to traditional detention tanks.

The best candidate will receive the prestigious 2026 James Rennie Medal in recognition of their achievements.

If you’re a graduate or student member aspiring to become a professionally qualified ICE member, you’ll find the evening invaluable. It will give an insight into some of the questions asked at Professional Review.

For all members it’s a chance to meet some of our brightest up-and-coming engineers and learn about interesting civil engineering projects.

The evening will be hosted by David Porter, ICE President and the Q&A sessions for the finalists will be chaired by Steve Feeley, ICE director of membership recruitment. The winner of the 2026 James Rennie Medal will be decided by the judges:

  • Olivia Perkins, managing director for rail at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, and chair of the James Rennie judging panel
  • Sarah Glover, associate director, ARUP
  • David Scarr, head of foundations, Jera Nex bp
  • Darren James, CEO, Aureos
  • Claire Lepoutre, head of planning, Skanska
