Overview

Scott O’Neill Technical Director within AECOM’s ground engineering team in the UK. He has over twenty years’ experience of assessing and remediating mining legacy issues and working with the UK mining and quarrying industry.

He was the appointed geologist for the ICE award winning Box Tunnel works and was the project manager for AECOM’s primary lining design of tunnels for HPC.

He and his team work closely with Network Rail and have provided technical advice for many ongoing rail schemes with mining constraints, including Wigan to Bolton Electrification, Transpennine Route Upgrade and HS2.   In addition, Scott is currently acting as mining CRE for a major Restoring Your Railways project in the northwest of the country through an historically mined geographical region.

Scott believes that pragmatism is required when investigating and assessing mining risk, this must be balanced against robust technical understanding of a site’s hazards.

This talk will look at the risks posed by mining and the manner in which these hazards may manifest themselves and the methods and tools available to all within the rail environment to assess the risk posed.

Scott O’Neill-Gwilliams

Scott is a Technical Director for AECOM UK and leads AECOM’s Mining Remediation Practice Group.  He has been interested and working with the coal mining legacy of the UK for twenty years.

He graduated from Imperial College with BSc in Geology and holds MScs in Geotechnical Engineering and Tunnelling.  His early career was spent working on small and medium sites blighted by mining issues and he joined AECOM (Scott Wilson) in 2006.

Scott’s work has taken him across Europe and the Middle East working on many notable mega projects.  He has always retained an interest in the importance the Industrial Revolution played in the emergence of the UK. He was a major contributor to the current CIRIA guidance on mining legacy in the UK and was a joint author for Chapter 13 (treatment)
