Overview

This webinar will explore recent project work from the UK which used government innovation funding to develop a set of productised modular components for bridge substructures.

The precast shell units can be used in different configurations to enable the rapid construction of bridge abutments and piers, reducing disruption to road and rail users.

Learn how WSP used digital techniques such as parametric modelling to confirm the viability of the solution for over 1500 different arrangements of span, skew and height and how the solution aligns with WSP’s Future Ready themes.

Gbenga Oludotun

Gbenga is a modern methods of construction lead at SYSTRA UK & Ireland, with over 13 years’ experience on the design and assessment of rail and highways structures. He has been responsible for the design delivery of projects including Great Western Electrification Project, East West Rail (Phase 2) and National Highways SPaTS framework.

He was the work package structures Lead on the HS2 Phase 1 Enabling Works contract where he was part of the team that developed the substructure modular elements and deployed them through to construction. He is a past chair of the ICE West Midlands region where he championed decarbonisation initiatives of the region.

Angel Ortega

Angel is a Structural Engineer at Global Consultancy WSP, with over 7 years’ experience on the design and assessment of civil structures. He is currently part of the team performing the Independent Design Review of the Fehmarnbelt link, which will be the longest immersed tunnel in the world. He has also played key roles in the engineering design of East West Rail (Phase 2) and several complex bridge strengthening schemes.

He is part of the Digital Steering Group at WSP Civil & Bridge Engineering discipline, where he contributes to the disciplines’ development in the fields of automation and computational design.
