Overview
Concrete is the second-most used material in the world, after water. It is highly useful and the materials it is made from are available in all parts of the world. It is cheap and abundant and is used in developed and developing countries alike.
It is also a low carbon product, but due to its ubiquity, cement accounts for 7% of global CO2 production. In the UK this figure is 1.5% and the concrete industry has been working hard to reduce the CO2 produced. There has been a fall of 53% from the 1990 figures and more work is being done.
This presentation will cover what the cement and concrete industry is doing to get to net zero by 2050 and what engineers can do now to reduce the CO2 in the concrete that they specify.
This is a joint event run by ICE Manchester, together with The Institution of Structural Engineer’s Lancashire and Cheshire Branch.
