Overview

ICE Wales Cymru Ground Engineering Group presents a webinar on Trackbed Ground Investigation and Design on the Wales and Borders Core Valleys Lines Project in South Wales.

This presentation aims to highlight the often forgotten and undervalued importance of a detailed ground investigation when aiming to undertake trackbed design through renewals, track lowering or track doubling.

It will also explore what data is required from a ground investigation to enable such design and the problems often faced while trying to do so.

The Wales and Borders project is undertaking a large scale upgrade and electrification of the Core Valleys lines in South Wales. This includes a large number of new track loops and track lowers.

The webinar will explore some of the specific problems encountered while working in this historically important yet often neglected section of track in relation to one of its key components, the track.

Graduating with a BSc Geology degree from Plymouth University in 2012, Matt started out working in a geotechnical laboratory before working as an engineering geologist. Matt joined Amey Consulting in 2015, and as part of the Bristol team, worked on a number of large rail projects including the Gospel Oak to Barking Electrification, Great Western Electrification Project, South Wales Immunisation Mainline Project and the Cambridge Re-signalling project. These and other smaller projects included many trackbed ground investigations and trackbed designs, ahead of proposed electrifications, station improvements and new sidings.

Matt has since progressed to Senior Geotechnical Engineer and is currently working on the Wales and Borders Core Valleys Lines electrification and line improvements project in South Wales, which to date has delivered over £2.5 million of ground investigation in a geologically challenging area.
