Overview

The ICE was there at the start; on this day in 1945, the UNESCO charter was signed and the first ever UNESCO meeting took place in the Great Hall, One Great George Street. Now we celebrate both the 75th year of the UN and the progress in engineering sustainability over this time, with a book entitled UN75: Sustainable Engineering in Action, published with Artifice Press.

Infrastructure is key to sustainable development; it influences all of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and in turn they all impact deeply, and increasingly, upon the whole infrastructure sector. We need civil engineers to increasingly use the SDGs in their work, to make society and the world more sustainable.

The ICE has a mission to make the SDGs accessible to built-environment professionals to ensure the infrastructure they build enables sustainability rather than diminishes it. As the profession broadens, we need to share good examples more. This book and this event champions leading examples of engineering sustainability, and there is learning here for all.

This event will showcase examples from leading clients, worldwide charities, standards bodies, international software houses and global development organisations. We hope that by highlighting sustainable engineering in action, we can inspire, engage and challenge current thinking.’

Speakers at this event will include Steve Crosskey, Head of Strategic Initiatives at the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), who will explain how the agency uses a systems-based approach to help with crosscutting SDGs, in particular for the supply of clean water and sanitation.

It will also feature Vincent Casey, Senior water, sanitation and hygiene manager – water at WaterAid, who will discuss how his organisation creates an enabling environment for lasting water and sanitation in low-income countries, where financial and human capital are in short supply.

In addition, Dr Scott Steedman, Director of Standards for the British Standards Institution, will explain the BSI’s data standards for sustainability and what this means for civil engineers.

And Jason Tucker, Director of Strategic Delivery & Commercial at Anglian Water, will talk about how the company is digitising its infrastructure and processes for managing its assets.
