Overview

This is an interactive event with panellists Morven Bridges, Ellen Halkon and Maddelon Holt-Smith, who will discuss their careers in civil engineering and provide insight into this year’s INWED (Women in Engineering Day) theme of engineering intelligence.

The event will include an open discussion where attendees will be invited to put their questions and views to the panellists.

The event will begin with informal networking over refreshments, offering the opportunity to connect with women in the local civil engineering sector and their allies.

Morven Bridges

Morven is Chartered civil engineer (member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and Fellow of the Institution of Engineers in Scotland) with a track record in infrastructure engineering, asset management and project and programme delivery, with both public and private sector organisations.


In her current role as head of engineering at Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd, a Scottish Government public corporation, she has organisational responsibility for leading and managing the Port Infrastructure Engineering department. In this role she delivers a significant portfolio of projects and programmes that contribute to the maintenance and improvement of port infrastructure necessary for vital ferry services serving the west coast of Scotland and the Clyde Estuary.

Ellen Halkon

Ellen Halkon is a Fellow of the ICE, current Chair of ICE Scotland and an associate director at WSP. She is experienced in the design of bridges in reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel composite and timber construction.

Her project experience ranges from new bridge design to bridge inspection and maintenance works on the UK highway and railway network. She is an experienced team leader and project manager and has prepared and managed transportation contracts through procurement processes to construction and completion, with a particular focus and experience of NEC projects.

With experience of both traditionally procured and design and build projects in the UK and abroad for both public and private sector clients, Ellen has contributed to a wide variety of successful projects.

In her role as ICE Scotland chair, she is leading efforts to improve knowledge and networking opportunities for Scottish members, and working to raise the profile of the ICE with the aim of positively influencing decisions on the development of Infrastructure in Scotland.

Maddelon Holt-Smith

Maddelon Holt-Smith is a civil engineer with experience delivering large-scale infrastructure and building projects across Australia and the United Kingdom. She has worked on major developments including the New Intercity Fleet Maintenance Facility, the Waterloo Integrated Station Development, and the 55 Pitt Street Development in Sydney. Through these developments she contributed to complex structural works, construction planning, and multidisciplinary coordination on projects valued up to $900 million. Alongside her professional work, she has volunteered in India on water sanitation initiatives and has been involved with the United Nations, reflecting an interest in sustainable development and community-focused outcomes.
