York Millennium Bridge is a landmark pedestrian and cycle bridge spanning the River Ouse, delivered as a Millennium project to improve connectivity between the city’s South Bank, the University of York and the city centre. Commissioned by the York Millennium Bridge Trust, the bridge has become an iconic piece of civic infrastructure and a well‑used public asset.
This site visit will be led by Graham Wilford, a Chartered Civil Engineer and former trustee and board member of the York Millennium Bridge Trust, which commissioned the design and construction of the bridge before it was handed over to the City of York Council. While not involved in the detailed engineering design, Graham was the trustee who liaised most closely with the consulting engineers and contractors throughout the project.
The event will focus on the client‑side perspective of delivering a complex and innovative structure, including the development of the project brief, design competition, stakeholder engagement, funding, and construction challenges.
The bridge’s distinctive inclined arch and suspended deck were designed by consulting engineers Whitby Bird & Partners, whose competition‑winning proposal drew inspiration from the spokes of a bicycle wheel. The contractor was Spencer of Barton on Humber and the steelwork subcontractor was Meldon of Barrow on Humber.
Through discussion on site, participants will gain insight into how strong leadership, collaboration between engineers, contractors and stakeholders, and a clear project vision contributed to the successful delivery of this enduring piece of infrastructure.
