Find out what steps you need to take based on your previous membership grade and how long it’s been since your membership ended.
Member (MICE) grade
If you were a professionally qualified member (MICE, EngTech/IEng/CEng MICE, or CEnv MICE), the steps to rejoin depend on how long it’s been since your membership ended.
Your membership is considered to have ended on 01 January of the first year in which your subscriptions were not paid.
If your membership expired less than 9 months ago, you can easily reinstate it online by accessing the 'Billing' tile.
If it’s been more than 9 months, please reach out to Membership Services at +44 (0)20 7665 2227 or email [email protected] to settle any outstanding fees and reactivate your membership. Keep in mind that a reinstatement fee will apply after 30 November to cover additional administrative work required to maintain your membership and registration.
If you have been absent from the ICE membership roll for between 12 months and three years, you will need to provide evidence of your activities during this time.
You can do this by sending the following documents to [email protected].
- A re-admission to membership application form
- A CV, including the period you have not been a member
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) records: Personal Development Record (PDR) for the last three years and Development Action Plan (DAP) for the next 12 months – our CPD guidance has more information
- A statement of no more than 500 words explaining why your membership ceased
We will review your submission, and if there is insufficient information to make a decision, we may request additional details or ask you to attend an interview. The interview allows ICE to evaluate your qualifications against the required attributes or standards for your membership grade.
If your application is approved you will be re-admitted on payment of the necessary fees.
If your membership lapsed more than three years ago, you will need to show that you have maintained your competence for the membership grade you're reinstating through your experience and ongoing professional development. You will need to send the following documents to [email protected]:
- A re-admission to membership application form
- A CV, including the period you have not been a member
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) records: Personal Development Record (PDR) for the last three years and Development Action Plan (DAP) for the next 12 months – our CPD guidance has more information
- A statement of no more than 500 words explaining why your membership ceased
- A 1,000 word report which demonstrates, with reference to the relevant membership attributes or standards, how through your experience and continuing professional development you have maintained your competence
- Completed questionnaire forms for the relevant grade filled out by two sponsors
- Certified copies of your academic qualifications
- Reinstatement interview fee
We will review your submission and let you know if any additional documentation is required. Once we have everything needed, we will arrange an interview. The interview will assess you against the attributes and standards for the membership grade you are reinstating.
Once your reinstatement is approved, you will need to pay a reinstatement fee*, which includes the current year's subscription and any outstanding Engineering Council subscription charges (if applicable), before your reinstatement can be fully processed.
*This will include the current year's subscription and outstanding Engineering Council subscription charges (if applicable).
You will need to pay a reinstatement fee, a professional review interview fee (if applicable), as well as the current year's subscription fee (charged on a pro-rata basis) and any Engineering Council subscription fees (if applicable) before you can rejoin.
The current year's fees will be pro-rated. Please check the current fees for more details.
If you are a current professionally qualified ICE member and only want to reinstate your registration with the Engineering Council (EngTech/IEng/CEng), please download the Engineering Council reinstatement application form and follow the same process as outlined above depending on when your registration ended.
If you are a current professionally qualified ICE member and only want to reinstate your registration with the Society for the Environment (CEnv), please download the reinstatement application form and follow the same process as outlined above depending on when your registration ended.
If you want to apply for a higher grade you can apply directly if you wish. If you are successful in applying for a higher grade, you will still have to pay a reinstatement fee together with the appropriate:
- ICE subscription fee
- Engineering Council registration fee (if applicable)
If you have registered directly with another Engineering Council professional engineering institution or one of our a Mutual recognition partners since lapsing your ICE membership, you may prefer to apply for recognition of that status rather than reinstating.
Please check the relevant webpage for the criteria and guidance on how to apply. Please note however that you must follow the reinstatement process outlined above if you wish to regain your Chartered Civil Engineer title in addition to CEng MICE.
Fellow (FICE) grade
If you were a Fellow (FICE) or professionally qualified Fellow (EngTech/IEng/CEng FICE/CEnv FICE), the steps to rejoin depend on how long it’s been since your membership ended.
If you were a professionally qualified Fellow and have been off the ICE membership roll between 12 months and three years, you will need to show us what you have been doing.
You can do this by sending the following documents to [email protected]:
- A re-admission to membership application form
- A CV, including the period you have not been a member
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD)records: Personal Development Record (PDR) for the last three years and Development Action Plan (DAP) for the next 12 months – our CPD guidance has more information
- A statement of no more than 500 words explaining why your membership ceased
We will assess your submission. If there is not enough information to make a decision, we may ask you to provide more information or to attend an interview.
The interview helps ICE to assess you against the attributes required for your membership grade.
If your application is approved you will be re-admitted on payment of the necessary fees.
If you were a professionally qualified Fellow and your membership ended more than three years ago, you need to demonstrate that through your experience and continuing professional development you have maintained your competence for the membership grade you are reinstating.
You will need to send the following documents to [email protected]:
- A re-admission to membership application form
- A CV, including the period you have not been a member

Once your reinstatement has been approved you will need to pay a reinstatement fee* before we can fully complete your reinstatement.
*This will include the current year's subscription and outstanding Engineering Council subscription charges (if applicable).
