A number of people in the civil engineering community have been included in the King's annual list.
Two ICE fellows have been recognised in King Charles' first New Year’s Honours list.
Dawn Childs, president of the Women's Engineering Society (WES), was awarded a DBE for services to engineering.
Meanwhile Terence (Terry) Stocks, director, UK head of public sector at Faithful+Gould, was awarded an MBE for services to construction innovation.
Dawn Childs DBE
Dame Dawn, who started her engineering career in the RAF straight from school, was elected president of WES in 2018.
The organisation champions women in engineering through initiatives including the annual International Women in Engineering Day (INWED).
Before WES, Dame Dawn held significant roles at Gatwick Airport, Merlin Entertainments (responsible for safety at theme parks), and National Grid.
Terry Stocks MBE
Terry Stocks is a chartered structural and civil engineer with more than 40 years' experience in the construction industry.
He has been at Faithful+Gould, part of the SNC-Lavalin Group, since 2015, working on government accounts including the Ministry of Justice and the Department for Education.
Other notable industry professionals recognised in the New Year’s Honours List 2023
CBEs were awarded to:
- Clara Barby, lately CEO of Impact Management Project, for services to international sustainability standards.
- Professor David Mosey, lately director of the Centre of Construction Law and Dispute Resolution, Dickson Poon School of Law, King's College London, for services to the construction industry.
OBEs were awarded to:
- Dr Nina Crampton Baker, DL, for services to the history of women in engineering.
- Professor Richard Graham Jones, science fellow, applied international development at the Met Office, for services to climate science.
An MBE was also awarded to Oluwole Olawale Folayan, the co-founder of the Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers UK (AfBE-UK), for services to equality, diversity and inclusion in engineering.
The AfBE-UK helped to develop the ICE's Anti-Racism Toolkit.
The toolkit provides training and development material, but also practical steps and guidance for organisations of all sizes, to help them be inclusive places to work.
