Trustees discussed the outcomes from the trustee strategy day, reviewed the annual report and received updates from the executive team on ICE activity.
Trustee strategy day
At the trustee strategy day in February, the trustees discussed the ICE’s approach to artificial intelligence (AI).
It was agreed that, as an institution, our focus should be on providing guidance to ensure that any new tools, whether they be AI-related or other emerging technologies, uphold our high standards and are used ethically.
Given the importance of this topic and its potential to impact all aspects of our profession, we agreed that the trustee board will hold collective responsibility for the ICE’s AI-related workplan.
Trustees undertook to discuss opportunities and risks with the principal committees that they chair, and a short guidance document on the ethical use of AI and other emerging technologies will be developed and disseminated to all committees and the wider membership.
It was also agreed that AI will be added to the agenda for the ICE Council meeting in July.
Annual report and accounts
Trustees reviewed the 2025 annual report and accounts, which was approved with a couple of minor changes. This is now being finalised and will be shared on the ICE website in May.
Audit committee update
Andy Alder, chair of the Audit Committee, provided his annual update. The committee's remit is to provide assurance that our systems, controls and processes do not impact on the institution’s ability to meet its objectives.
The committee ensures that the right risk management processes are in place. It recently conducted risk workshops to ensure that the ICE’s risk register is kept up to date.
Trustees were reassured that the Audit Committee had not identified any risks that they did not already know about.
The chair also talked through the progress that had been made on internal audits and updated on the changes that were being put in place to ensure processes are as safe and efficient as possible.
The director general also provided an update on ICE activity in 2025. We discussed the new membership management system and the work that was being done to resolve the technical issues and enhance member experience.
