Welsh apprentice takes home award second year in a row

It’s a case of ‘déjá vû’ this year as civil engineering apprentice, Dominic Henson, has been named ICE Wales Cymru Apprentice of the Year for the second year running.

Following on from a successful 2022, Henson impressed the judges with his work ethic, increasing his knowledge to show continuous development and understanding of civil engineering.

Henson has been working at Atkins Global since 2019. Associate principal engineer at Atkins, Huw Jones, noted Henson’s progress over the last year.

Jones said: “Dominic has certainly stepped up over the past 12 months, taking on more responsibility within the projects he’s been involved with.

“He has led the way in terms of planning, which has given him valuable exposure to health and safety issues.

“He has also taken on the people management role within the team, organising suitable staff to carry out inspection and liaison with third party suppliers.”

Henson will receive a monetary prize, a trophy and a certificate of his achievement at the ICE Wales Cymru 2023 Awards ceremony at the Marriott Hotel in Cardiff on 22 September.

Henson acknowledges the strong competition this year and said he was “delighted” to have been successful.

“I know there was some very strong competition and am very happy to have edged the decision,” he said.

“Winning the award will hopefully allow me to gain many new contacts within the industry and help me to pursue new opportunities to develop.”

Director of ICE Wales Cymru, Keith Jones, congratulated Henson for his consecutive wins.

“My congratulations go to Dominic who, having won the award in 2022, didn’t stop there but went on to accomplish more, involving himself in further aspects of civil engineering,” he said.

“Apprentices are vital to the future of civil engineering and Dominic is a shining example of what can be achieved if you involve yourself and carry on learning.”

ICE Wales Apprentice of the Year Award

ICE Wales Cymru invites applications for this award, which launched during National Apprentice Week (February 2023).

Open to all ICE civil engineering apprentices across Wales, applicants need to be ICE members and a member of an apprenticeship scheme.

The winner will typically demonstrate excellence in achievement and willingness to be an outstanding ambassador for the civil engineering industry.

ICE Wales Cymru Apprentice of the Year, sponsored by SWIEET, is awarded for excellence in professional and academic study undertaken by apprentices of the Wales Apprenticeship Alliance.

This is a collaboration between ICE Wales Cymru, Welsh government – transport and apprenticeship divisions, Arcadis and SWIEET.
